MCLE - Mandatory Continuing Legal Education

What is MCLE - Mandatory Continuing Legal Education ?

Every year, all lawyers who have a current Practising Certificate in New South Wales (NSW) are mandated to fulfil MCLE ( Mandatory Continuing Legal Education ) , also known as CPD or continuing professional development, unless they are appropriately allowed to have a legal exemption. To hold a current Practising Certificate, this is a mandatory requirement.

The MCLE (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education ) or CPD year runs from 1 April of one year to 31 March of the next year . Mostly , a practicing lawyer is mandated to obtain ten MCLE (CPD) units/year. The MCLE (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education ) or CPD program is premised on self-assessment of appropriate self-learning activities. As long as it is assessed to be relevant to the short or long-term requirements of one's legal professional development , then it is possible and reasonable to count that activity for the benefit of MCLE fulfilment.

It is absolutely imperative ( hence the name 'mandatory' ) for practising legal dudes in most Australian States and Territories to fulfil at least ten 10 long hours of MCLE (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education ) or continuing professional development (CPD) each and every year. Seminars and conferences do indeed count towards points, and many institutions offer interesting and flexible delivery possibilities , not ruling out in-house learning, on the line education like webinars and videos as well as audio products. Of course all these optins will vary from location to location and Territory to State .
